Megan Foster Elite 89 Award

December 8th, 1911

The Chico State women’s soccer team is already assured of bringing home one title from the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championships Final Four before even playing a match. Wildcats goalkeeper Megan Foster was named the winner of the Elite 89 Award at Wednesday night’s pre-championship banquet. The award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 championships. During a homework break later Wednesday night, just 12 hours before the Wildcats face Grand Valley State in a Final Four match in Pensacola, Fla., Foster admitted that she was unaware that the award even existed prior to the banquet.  “I was just thinking about how awesome it is that they give the award. Then my name was called. I’m pretty sure my jaw hit the floor,” said Foster, the first Chico State athlete to win the award. “I was completely shocked and surprised. It just feels like such an accomplishment. All those late nights doing homework and stuff – it was all worth it.”  The sophomore from Davis (Davis Legacy and Davis High) has not yet declared a major. But she says she’s thinking about either criminology or forensics. Look out bad guys!  Chico State Head Coach Kim Sutton is proud, to say the least.  “Every semester goes by and I look at what she’s doing in the classroom and I’m so proud of her,” said Sutton. “She works so hard as a student and an athlete – it just blows me away. I couldn’t be more proud of her.”  Making the night even more special for Foster was that her father, Charles, was there with her.  “My dad hasn’t been able to come out to California to watch me play ever. So the fact that he was able to be with me was really awesome,” she said.  Charles Foster lives in Florida. When Megan said where, I knew my next stop was a map website to figure out the spelling. Fortunately, I had an Elite 89 winner on the phone.  She spelled it out for me. P-a-l-a-t-k-a. Then it was back to the books for Megan Foster, at least for a bit. Soon the alarm will sound and she’ll put them down for a few hours to go play in the biggest match in Chico State women’s soccer history.
