Davis United Finalist at Santa Clara Sporting Invitational

August 18th, 2010

Last weekend the Davis Legacy United, a U10 competitive boys soccer, placed second in the prestigious Santa Clara Sporting Invitational Tournament, arguably the top boys soccer tournament in Northern California. On Friday Davis played tournament-host Santa Clara Sporting.  Ryan Hulbert set up Matt Martinez with a nice feed, which was followed by a Jonah Henrickson pass to Martinez making it 2-0 in the first half.  In the second half, Elijah Alba took a feed from Ethan Park and cracked it off the underside of the crossbar for a 3-0 lead.  Sporting pulled a goal back making at the final score 3-1.

Davis was unable to get anything going in their second game on Friday and lost 2-0 to a tough Santa Rosa United side.

Davis needed a win Saturday morning to advance and they did it convincingly, beating Clovis-based Cal Odyssey 10-0.  It was a true team effort with dynamic passing throughout leading six different goal scorers.  Martinez led the way with three goals and two assists.  Park and Cedric Maume added two goals.  Tyson Duncan, Alba, and Aaron Mayr rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece.  Tyler Roupp contributed two brilliant assists from the left side and Giacomo Sorrentino, Duncan and Maume also had assists.

In Saturday afternoon’s Quarter Final matchup, Davis faced a tough battle against the highly-ranked Modesto Ajax side.  The Davis backline, led by Alba, Sorrentino, and Hulbert defended well against the prolific Ajax side and the game remained scoreless through the first half.  Six minutes into the second half, Henrickson sent a dangerous, lofted ball over the head of the Ajax defense.  The Ajax keeper misjudged it and Duncan intelligently slipped in to take advantage of the mistake putting Davis up 1-0.  With five minutes to go, the quick and skilled Ajax attackers finally got through on the left side and a perfect cross was put away knotting the score at 1 and sending the game to penalty kicks.  Davis was first up and Duncan made his shot. Ajax missed their first shot. Henrickson made his shot. Ajax missed their second kick. Mayr made his shot, which made it 3-0 Davis in penalty kicks. Ajax made their first penalty kick on their third attempt. Davis’ fourth shot was by Sorrentino, which was wide. Ajax made their fourth making it 3-2 Davis. Davis only needed one more to win. Enter “Ice” Martinez, who calmly stepped up and slotted his shot low left on the keeper for the 4-2 victory in PKs.

In Sunday morning’s Semi-final game, Davis faced top-ranked Atletico Santa Rosa who took out the State Cup champion Turlock Wolves in the quarters.  It was another exciting game with good play.  It ended with a win for Davis in a low-scoring game (1-0) when Martinez broke free down the left side and sent a perfect pass to the slashing  Maume who deftly beat the keeper.  Tremendous goalkeeping from Jacob Rosenthal was the only thing that kept Athletico scoreless and put Davis through to the finals.

In the final, Davis played their arch-rivals San Juan Lightning.  An early goal in the second half for San Juan proved to be the game’s only goal.  Duncan gave San Juan fits all day, but Davis was still unable to score.  Davis battled to the end including a header by Hulbert off a corner in the final minute that just missed the corner of the net.  Coach Roy Hodgson said “I was extremely proud of the overall effort throughout and the team showed great character and sportsmanship.  It was a successful weekend in every way.”
